Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness has aimed a jibe at Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho after his recent comments about rivals Manchester City.

Mourinho hit out his local rivals, stating that “you cannot buy class” after he was mocked in their documentary about their title-winning 2017/2018 campaign.

However, Souness has aimed a dig at the United manager, criticising how it is “rich” how he can talk about class after petulant spats with rival bosses.

He said on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday programme (Main Event channel, 1pm) ahead of City’s clash with Huddersfield: “There isn’t a dressing room or manager that doesn’t talk about the opposition in a derogatory way when you’re about to play them.

“I don’t think it’s right that City have dragged up interviews with Jose and De Bruyne, obviously that was a mistake. Every manager makes a mistake in selling a player that shouldn’t be sold, it comes back to bite them.

“But it’s rich that he is talking about class, I am specifically thinking of some of the spats with Arsene Wenger, that wasn’t very classy.”

OPINION

Graeme Souness was right to aim a jibe at Mourinho after his unnecessary comments about City. Yes, they mocked him in their documentary, but that gave him no right to lay into them as a result of it. As an experienced manager, he should know by now that you should take comments made by your rivals on the chin. City obviously did not mean any harm by mocking Mourinho, but it is surprising that he has taken it so seriously. Like Souness said, he cannot talk about class after his previous spats with managers – especially with former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger. The Portuguese coach needs to think before he speaks, otherwise his remarks will be regarded no more as an attempt to get attention. This time, it has succeeded – but he needs to stop making such unnecessary remarks if he wants to be taken seriously by his rivals in future.
