Everton are close to signing Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo as they continue an astonishing deadline-day signing blitz, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper claim on their live transfer blog (Thursday, 3.24pm) that the Toffees are hoping to finalise the capture of the Argentina international for £22million as they also look to complete deals for Barcelona centre-back Yerry Mina and midfielder Andre Gomes.

The Telegraph report the “signing of Rojo is also now expected to happen” on what would be a permanent deal after he was told he can leave Old Trafford.

OPINION

Wow. That is the word that best sums up Everton’s potential deadline day, as five last-ditch signings are on the cards. Brazil international Bernard arrived yesterday to finalise terms and well sourced reports claim four more could follow in a staggering blizzard of last ditch announcements. L’Equipe claim the Merseysiders have agreed a loan deal for Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma and the spine of the team could be further strengthen with the big-money centre-back captures of Mina and Rojo, as well as central midfielder Gomes. Great news for the club’s supporters and the team’s hopes of gatecrashing the elite under new boss Marco Silva. Not such good news for Michael Keane, Mason Holgate and Phil Jagielka. With Ashley Williams and Ramiro Funes Mori offloaded this summer, they might have felt they were sitting pretty. But that does not appear to be the case, as better players head in to Goodison Park.
