Everton are working on a last-gasp deal to sign Barcelona defender Yerry Mina, according to a reliable journalist.

Sky Sports correspondent Alan Myers, who is an Everton specialist and sent a series of deadline day tweets about the club on Wednesday night, reported on his personal Twitter account that the Toffees are in hot pursuit of the Colombia international following extensive recent talks.

Myers told his followers that “I told you Mina will go to the last day” as he predicted intense transfer activity at Everton on deadline day.

Good move for Everton?

Definitely. Mina is a 6ft 4in, a commanding presence in both penalty boxes, mobile enough to hold his own with most attackers in a foot race and excellent on the ball. Mysteriously ignored by Barcelona since joining in January (Gerard Pique seems to always be selected irrespective of how average his performances are), the Colombian would be a massive upgrade on the centre-backs currently available to Marco Silva. He is certainly in need of reinforcements in that position after offloading Ashley Williams and Ramiro Funes Mori this summer, and is almost certain to bring in one central defender – and possibly two – before the window slams shut.

Likely to happen?

This one will go down to the wire. Everton’s pursuit has been complicated by Barcelona’s £35million valuation and extensive interest from elsewhere, most notably Lyon. The Merseysiders will have to spend big to get Mina, but don’t bet against that happening.
