Leeds United have opened talks to sign Aston Villa winger Albert Adomah as they eye a stunning deadline day coup, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The regional newspaper claim Leeds and Adomah’s former club Middlesbrough have been given hope of a last-gasp deal by Villa, who have declined to offer the attacker a new contract.

The Birmingham Mail report the interest from the two Championship big hitters has been ramped up after the door to a late transfer was opened by Steve Bruce’s side.

Good move for Leeds?

Yes, definitely. Adomah is a matchwinner who would add something Leeds are crying out for – pace and goals from out wide. He may have blown out 30 candles on his birthday cake, but the Ghana international is in the form of his life after scoring 15 goals from 44 matches last season to do more than anyone to almost take Villa back to the Premier League. That was enough for him to win Villa’s player of the season award, and Leeds could certainly do with such penetration from out wide. With 337 Championship appearances under his belt, Adomah would be an excellent recruit who knows what it takes to deliver the goods in the demanding English second tier.

Likely to happen?

The possibility has increased significantly in recent hours. Leeds have money to spend after offloading Ronaldo Vieira last week and the need for a right-winger. It is a concern that big-spending Boro are also in the chase, but they are also looking to seal a late deal for Yannick Bolasie from Everton, which could leave the coast clear for the Yorkshire giants.
