Everton navigated their way past a potential banana skin tonight, beating Rotherham 3-1 after a late scare at Goodison Park.
Gylfi Sigurdsson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin got the first two goals, one in each half, but Rotherham got a late one back in the 86th minute before Calvert-Lewin put the tie to bed a minute later.
Everton fans were happy to progress but were fuming at a terrible display from striker Oumar Niasse.
He’s been restricted to cameo appearances so far this season after scoring eight in 22 league games in 17/18.
However, if he was hoping to take his chance tonight it didn’t happen. He never looked like scoring and fans were glad to see the back of him when he was subbed off for Cenk Tosun in the 73rd minute.

OPINION
Oumar Niasse has had a rollercoaster ride at Everton that has seen him demoted from the first team before being reinstated and threatening to become a cult figure at Goodison Park. That could have come to an end. He’s not going to get many starts in the Premier League this season, if any at all, and on tonight’s performance fans will be glad. He was pretty awful against lower league opposition and he hasn’t done anything to convince his manager that he should be higher up in the pecking order. Some fans are still fond of him – as one pointed out on Twitter some fans gave him a standing ovation when he went off, but their tongues were definitely in their cheeks.
