Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has taken a light-hearted view upon Mike Ashley’s £90million purchase of House of Fraser, even though the move has left a lot of the club’s fans furious.

Sports Direct released a statement on Friday which confirms that confirms that the company has acquired the business and assets of House of Fraser “for a cash consideration of £90 million”.

Even though it has caused a huge stir among the fans, Shearer has joked that Ashley has instead spent the £90million on a player.

“What position does he play?” the former England and Newcastle striker said on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

It’s probably a joke that has been repeated by hundreds of people since the news was released, but at least Shearer has taken the news well – unlike some fans. Ashley’s ownership of the Tyneside club has been nothing short of ridiculous. He has overseen two relegations from the Premier League and it could well be a third this season if Rafa Benitez decides to quit. The Spaniard could without doubt manage a team with better prospects and perhaps even better money than the Magpies and given how the summer transfer window went down, it would not be a surprise at all to see him quit if results are not great in the coming weeks. It will be interesting to hear if Benitez has anything to say about Ashley buying House of Fraser. A lot of fans seem to believe that this £90million, or at least a chunk of it, could have gone into strengthening the squad. Maybe Benitez feels the same way?
