Newcastle United have approached Ligue 1 club Toulouse with an enquiry about centre-back Christopher Jullien, according to Les Violets.

The French news outlet that is a trusted source of information about Toulouse claims that Everton and Southampton have also made contact about the 25-year-old, who wants to quit his club this summer.

La Depeche has reported earlier this summer that both Burnley and Crystal Palace are also interested in signing £8.9million-rated colossus, who according to transfermarkt is 6ft 4in tall.

Good move for Newcastle?

Rafa Benitez has not had the best of times this summer, however the sale of Aleksandar Mitrovic should really free up some funds for him to strengthen his squad.

Florian Lejeune’s injury is a major blow going into the new season and it means that Newcastle could probably do with a centre-back adding to their squad.

Jullien could be a decent cheap option if they were to follow up on their enquiry but Les Violets report that he has not been in the best of form in pre-season.

The Magpies have not had a lot of luck with signing players from France in recent years either, so maybe it is best that they avoid signing Jullien and go for a loan deal to fill the temporary void left by Lejune while he is sidelined.

Likely to happen?

There are not many smiley faces around St James’ Park at the moment with the fans furious with how Mike Ashley has restricted Benitez in the summer transfer window.

If the club is going to sign anyone, it will be a striker and then a left-back, with a centre-back probably one of the last priorities.

Jullien’s form in the pre-season has not helped and due to the amount of clubs interested in signing him, it’s hard to see him heading to St James’.
