Marcelo Bielsa has a release clause worth £7.8million tied into his contract at Leeds United and the Mexico national team have looked at potentially hiring the Argentine, according to Record.

The Mexican news outlet claims that the Mexican Football Federation would have to trigger the 63-year-old’s release clause in order to pry him away from Elland Road as the replacement for Juan Carlos Osorio, who left his role with the North American nation after the World Cup.

It is understood that even though Mexico want Bielsa, a potential move for him has been ruled out due to his release clause.

OPINION

If Bielsa manages to keep Leeds playing the way they are playing, then it surely won’t be long before someone has the money to trigger that £7.8million release clause because in terms of getting a top-quality manager, that isn’t a lot of money for say a Premier League club. Once top-flight clubs get itchy trigger fingers later in the season, there is a chance that one of them could make a move for Bielsa if the Whites’ form and enthralling style of football continues for another few months. Hopefully it does not come to that and Record are wide of the mark in reporting that the ex-Athletic Bilbao boss has a release clause, but for Leeds to pull off the coup of hiring him in the first place, it kind of makes sense that this agreement would be in place. Either way, Bielsa has only just moved to Elland Road and he appears pretty happy so far. Moving to manage Mexico could potentially be a backwards step given the direction the Yorkshire giants are going in at the moment.
