Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli rejected the chance to join West Ham and Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims online that Bettinelli, 26, is now considering his options after his future at Craven Cottage was left in doubt thanks to the summer arrivals of Fabri and Sergio Rico.

The 6ft 4in (transfermarkt) colossus was left out of the squad that played Fulham’s first game back in the Premier League on Saturday when the Cottagers lost 2-0 to Palace.

It is understood that he turned down West Ham and Palace as he though he would be Fulham’s No 1 shot-stopper this season.

OPINION

Bettinelli is by no means a bad goalkeeper. Last season he was crucial to Fulham’s promotion campaign by keeping 14 clean sheets in 30 appearances across all competitions. They lost just two league games in which he played and one of them was on the last day of the season when the play-off spot was already secured. It’s a shame about what has happened to the former England Under-21 international, but it is also part and parcel about what happens to a club when they are promoted. Bettinelli is clearly top-class in the Championship, but he has never played in top-flight football and Slavia Jokanovic clearly thought that he must upgrade his goalkeeper options. West Ham probably wouldn’t have given him a starting spot anyway, but Palace certainly could have. Either way, there’s no chance of him joining a Premier League now unless he holds out until January but a move on loan to the Championship could be on the cards.
