BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton has hinted that Blackburn centre-back Charlie Mulgrew might be able to do a job for Celtic if the Glasgow giants wanted to re-sign the Scotland international.

Mulgrew, 32, scored two penalties for Rovers on Wednesday night as they came from behind to draw 2-2 with Reading in the Championship.

The 6ft 2 (transfermarkt) defender was also prolific in front of goal last season for the Ewood Park club, scoring 14 goals in 41 League One appearances.

And amid Celtic’s defensive woes, Sutton has suggested a potential move to re-sign Mulgrew might not be such a bad idea.

“Blackburn Rovers superb comeback. Charlie Mulgrew two goals! Wonder whether he could still do a job at Celtic,” said Sutton on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday night.

OPINION

Would it be so bad for Celtic to re-sign Mulgrew? While the Bhoys do not need to find themselves a goalscoring defender like the Blackburn Rovers star, they do need someone who can bring some leadership to the backline and help cut out so many avoidable goals. Mulgrew has plenty of experience. He made over 200 appearances in all competitions for Celtic in his two previous spells at Parkhead and won five Scottish Premiership titles in the progress. Is he better that say Jozo Simunovic or the missing-in-action Dedryck Boyata? Probably not, and ideally Brendan Rodgers should be looking for someone who is in the prime of their career and not just making headlines because they are lethal from the penalty spot. If Rodgers does not sign one or even two centre-backs between now and the end of the month, it could be a very frustrating season for the club’s supporters.
