Swansea are winning the race for free agent and former West Brom and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu, according to the Scottish Sun.

The 31-year-old left Scottish club Kilmarnock in the summer and is still on the lookout for a new club.

Swansea have competition, with Scottish clubs keen to sign him and other Championship rivals also interested.

However, the report claims that Swansea have had “positive discussions” and that they are confident they can seal a deal in the next few days.

OPINION

As a free agent Mulumbu can sign at any time so Swansea are under no pressure to get the deal done by the Friday EFL loan deadline. Mulumbu would add a lot of experience to the squad and would be a decent addition. He’s played 164 Premier League games, scoring 11 goals and registering nine assists and he’s a former Congo international with 31 caps. His best days might be behind him, but he played a big part in Kilmarnock finishing fifth in the Premiership last season and managerSteve Clarke wanted to keep hold of him. Bordeaux were also interested in taking him back earlier in the summer but talks broke down. If he’s good enough for Ligue 1, he’s good enough to come in and do a job for the Swans in the Championship. The Welsh club are said to be confident and Mulumbi could be unveiled imminently, possibly even ahead of the weekend fixtures.
