Swansea City must succeed in their pursuit of Youssouf Mulumbu as it will finally allow Graham Potter to axe struggling midfielder Tom Carroll from his side.

The Scottish Sun reported on Wednesday that the Swans were leading the race to sign the 31-year-old free agent and could agree a deal for him within the next few days.

While Mulumbu may not be the most inspiring of signings given his age at least his potential arrival will finally see the Swans able to drop Carroll from their side.

The 5ft 8in tall Swans midfielder (Source: Transfermarkt) has proven himself to be a liability in the Championship so far this season as he has constantly lost the ball and looks unable to deal with the physical demands of the league.

In fact while Carroll may have previously proven himself good enough to feature in the Premier League, so far this season it’s easy to see that life in England’s second-tier is not for him as he has fell well short of the required standard across his five appearances.

Despite struggling, the 26-year-old has managed to retain his place in the Swans’ starting line-up and this is mostly due to Potter having few options to choose from.

However the arrival of midfield enforcer Mulumbu would instantly see the Swans boss have someone to replace Carroll with on a regular basis.

This all means that the Swans have to succeed in their reported free agent pursuit as it would mean that Carroll could finally be axed on a regular basis which will see his side able to fare better in the Championship.
