Burnley have submitted a new bid for West Brom striker Jay Rodriguez, according to Guardian journalist Ed Aarons.

He claimed the fresh bid, almost certain to have smashed the Baggies’ record £15million sale of Saido Berahino, was submitted on Tuesday night, while Rodriguez was playing in the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

He added that the Premier League side were hoping to complete the move today, with Rodriguez keen on re-joining Burnley.

This comes after the Telegraph reported that West Brom rejected a club-record £16million bid for Burnley a week ago.

Good move for West Brom?

This is a great move. West Brom have now got one of the deadliest strikers in the Championship, after Dwight Gayle moved from Newcastle on loan. Rodriguez is a quality player but he only scored seven goals last season and Gayle is a significant upgrade. Rodriguez gets to return to the Premier League at his old club, and West Brom get a significant amount of money in the bank. It’s a win/win deal. Aarons doesn’t say how much the bid was but it must be more than the club-record £16million fee the Baggies have already rejected. It’s good business. Now Burnley will have to see if they can inspire Rodriguez to greater heights than West Brom managed last season.

Likely to happen?

Rodriguez is surplus to requirements at West Brom and want a deal done. Burnley want him and they can’t be a million miles apart on their valuations. Burnley want it done today but it might take until tomorrow to officially announce it. We can’t see it not happening though.
