TalkSport host Alan Brazil has slammed the Celtic hierarchy for missing out on the chance to sign Scotland international John McGinn.

Aston Villa snapped up McGinn from Hibernian last week after it was reported by the Scotsman that the Hoops had seen three bids rejected for the midfield dynamo, with the highest being £2million.

Former Scotland and Manchester United player Brazil believes that Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has been left disappointed by failing to sign McGinn, but has claimed that his job safety is not under any threat.

“For Aston Villa to swoop in just before the English transfer window closed was embarrassing for the Hoops’ hierarchy,” said Brazil on the Sunday Post website.

“It has also annoyed the manager.

“Given the success Brendan has had at Parkhead over the last few years, that’s not something I think the club’s powers-that-be should be trying to do.

“Thankfully for Celtic fans, Rodgers is in absolutely no danger of being punted out the door, whatever happens this season.”

OPINION

Some Celtic fans may not agree by McGinn would have been a quality signing for the club and would have certainly filled the hole left by Stuart Armstrong after he left to join Southampton. Many have tipped the now former Hibs midfielder to be the long-term successor for Scott Brown at Celtic Park, but now with him south of the border at Aston Villa, it’s likely that he will not make a move to Glasgow until the latter stages of his career. McGinn had a stunning debut for the West Midlands club in their 3-2 win against Wigan on Saturday and will surely be ogled by Premier League clubs if he continues that form. It is bad that Celtic missed out on him. They tabled offers that were blatantly never going to be accepted and decided to play the dangerous waiting game to see if Hibs would cave in at end of transfer window as his contract expires next year. What wasn’t expected was for and English club to make a move in their deadline day last week. Brazil is right. It’s embarrassing.
