A section of Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight at the debut performance of Nikola Katic in Friday night’s friendly win over Bury.

In Steven Gerrard’s first match as manager, the Light Blues demolished the League 2 side 6-0 at Ibrox, through a Scott Arfield double and goals from Katic, Jamie Murphy, Alfredo Morelos and Zak Rudden.

Supporters were particularly impressed by the contribution of Katic, who was signed in the summer, and lined up alongside fellow new arrival Connor Goldson in the centre of defence.

COMMENTARY:

There is some early love out there on social media for new arrival Katic, who was signed to provide the ballast in defence so often lacking last season. The giant Croatian, who stands at 6ft 4in (Transfermarkt) made a big impression with supporters not only with a debut goal after driving forward from defence, but also with his solid contribution at the back alongside Goldson. The pair are expected to be the first-choice partnership under new boss Gerrard, with David Bates and Danny Wilson long since gone, Bruno Alves set to be sold after a disappointing year and Russell Martin back at Norwich City following a mixed loan spell. The early signs are good with Katic, but much, much bigger tests lie ahead.
