Joe Mason is set to return to Wolves at the end of this month after his loan spell at Colorado Rapids was terminated, it has been confirmed.

The Premier League club announced on their official Twitter account on Thursday afternoon that the striker, 27, is on his way back to Molineux from the Major League Soccer club.

Wolves explain that Mason will report to the club’s Compton training headquarters in two weeks’ time on 27 July.

OPINION

Mason’s imminent return to Wolves strongly suggests he is set to transfer to a new club. He had a decent record at Colorado, scoring three goals in 13 appearances and, while no reason has been given for the early termination of the loan midway through the MLS season, it is unlikely to be due to poor performance. More likely, the player who scored for Rapids on his debut against Kansas City has a move lined up back in England, or needs to be be in the UK to seal one following discussions. Given Wolves’ promotion to the Premier League, it is hard to see a key role for the versatile forward in Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad. Signed from Cardiff in 2016, he has a record of seven goals from 39 appearances for the Midlands giants – creditable enough but hardly awe-inspiring – and was on the fringes before his January move to the States.
