A section of Everton fans have taken to Twitter to express their hope the club will not cash in on Jordan Pickford after Jamie Carragher suggested a bid is to be tabled for the goalkeeper.

The high-profile pundit and Liverpool legend claimed in a Twitter exchange with an Echo journalist on Wednesday night that “a bid is coming” for the Goodison Park and England number one in the wake of his World Cup heroics.

Carragher’s claim did not go down well with the blue half of Merseyside, with Evertonians split between those who claimed the club would never cash in on him and others who chided the former centre-back for supporting a club whose current keeper is Loris Karius.

COMMENTARY:

Is Carragher simply teasing Evertonians? Or does he have a snippet of transfer information that he has elected to share with his 1million-plus followers on Twitter? Certainly, the high-profile Sky Sports pundit is well connected, especially when it comes to Merseyside football and, as bluenoses love reminding him, he supported Everton before he switched to the red side of the city. Given Pickford’s outstanding performances for England at the World Cup – he was their best player in the knockout stages – it would be a surprise if a few elite clubs did not try and make Everton an offer they couldn’t refuse for the player they signed from Sunderland 12 months ago. Pickford is 24 and has the world at his feet. He is undeniably the club’s prize asset and his value has rocketed following the events of the last few weeks.
