West Ham are in the hunt to sign Paraguay international Miguel Almiron, according to Guardian reporter Ed Aarons.

The reliable journalist claimed on his personal Twitter account on Friday that the Hammers are looking into signing Almiron, 24, from MLS franchise Atlanta United this summer, but they are unlikely to sign the attacker if they also snap up ex-Arsenal ace Jack Wilshere.

Almiron has been in deadly form in the MLS this season with the South American attacker involved in 17 goals in his 19 league appearances, scoring eight and supplying nine assists.

Good move for West Ham?

Almiron is one of the most exciting players in the MLS and would certainly be a good addition for the Hammers, however given the fact that it seems to be either him or Wilshere, Manuel Pellegrini has to go with the tried and tested England international.

It’s odd that West Ham would only sign one or the other as they are very much two different kinds of players.

Almiron is a pacey attacking midfielder who loves to drive into the box, while Wilshere is very much a playmaker who sits a bit deeper and rarely gets into the opposition area.

Pellegrini should really sign both as Almiron would be a good back-up option for Manuel Lanzini, who is sidelined for several months.

Likely to happen?

Atlanta United are likely to want a lot of cash for Almiron as he is by far and away their most important player and if not the best player in the MLS so far this season.

Given the fact that Wilshere seems more likely to join at this stage, it’s hard to see Almiron coming as well going off this information.

However as mentioned, they are two different types of player and odd that one deal would impact the other.
