Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is continuing to bring in familiar faces to Ibrox as he closes in on the capture of former Liverpool doctor Mark Waller as part of his backroom staff, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claim that the Light Blues are set to appoint the 60-year-old medical member of staff as he makes the move from Championship side Hull City, having worked at Anfield during Gerrard’s playing days.

The ex-Aston Villa man was said to have been crucial in saving the life of former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier, who required emergency surgery after Waller insisted he was taken to hospital following chest pains during a clash with Leeds United.

Opinion

Gerrard already has a number of former players and staff working under and alongside him and the Liverpool connection looks to continue with the arrival of Waller, who will be used to giving the manager rather than his players tests having worked at Anfield when the Reds icon was still out on the pitch. The new man in the dugout is obviously looking for people he can trust in as he makes his first foray into management, and that is important as it means that everyone is in the same boat moving forward. Of course, while it is all well and good bringing in staff behind the scenes, what really matters is out on the football pitch and Gerrard needs to make sure that he has the best possible squad at his disposal to try and close the gap to a rampant Celtic side at the top of the Premiership table. Before then are the crucial Europa League qualifiers – Gerrard’s first competitive games in charge – and fans will quickly learn whether he has what it takes to be a success.
