Rangers are edging closer to triggering a release clause in Jake Cooper’s contract at Rangers, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that the Gers have made a new and improved bid to sign the 23-year-old, offering the English Championship club £3million for his services, a fee that almost matches his release clause at the New Den.

It is understood that the 6ft 5in (transfermarkt) colossus has been made the leading candidate to replace Bruno Alves at Ibrox, who is set to join Serie A side Parma on the termination of his Rangers contract.

Good move for Rangers?

Cooper had a very impressive season for Millwall last season as they performed way above expectations in their first year back in the Championship.

The left-sided defender scored four goals and supplied three assists in 42 appearances across all competitions for the London club.

He would clearly be a good signing for the Light Blues, especially with Alves on his way out.

Steven Gerrard has not wasted time in proving his newly-inherited defence, and so far, his business looks pretty good. Adding Cooper would be the icing on the cake.

Likely to happen?

If Rangers are close to triggering Cooper’s release clause, then there’s no way that Millwall would accept this offer and they would certainly want to hold out for his maximum value.

Neil Harris could want to open contract talks with the 23-year-old as soon as possible to try and remove the release clause and show Rangers that they have no chance of signing him up.

The Gers may not have much more to offer to sign the defender, so it’s hard to see where they can go from here.
