West Ham have tabled a bid worth £22million for Lyon defender Marcelo, however it has been rejected by the Ligue 1 giants, according to Goal.

The French news outlet claims that the Hammers have also offered Marcelo, 31, a £50,000-a-week deal in order to try and lure him to the London Stadium this summer.

It is understood that this is the second bid that the Irons have tabled for the 6ft 3in (transfermarkt) colossus, with their first offer of just over £15million also being kicked into touch by Lyon.

Good move for West Ham?

If West Ham cannot sign a 31-year-old defender for £22million, then they must instantly scrap their pursuit of the Lyon mainstay now.

Marcelo was in good form for Lyon last season, appearing 49 times across all competitions while scoring five goals and keeping clean sheets against the likes of Everton, Villarreal, Marseille and Nice.

However there is just no way that he is worth the money that the Hammers have reportedly been offering and Manuel Pellegrini should give up on trying to sign him immediately.

Likely to happen?

It would be ridiculous if West Ham were to increase their offer yet again for Marcelo, so it is really hard to see this deal being completed this summer.

While the £50,000-a-week wage offer is reasonable, the transfer fee is ridiculously high for someone who is approaching the end of his career.

In comparison, Marcelo would cost the Hammers more than Issa Diop did.
