Rangers are working on a deal to sign £5million-valued Peterborough winger Gwion Edwards on a pre-contract agreement, according to Football Insider.

The reliable football site claim Gers director of football is keen to recruit the 25-year-old on a pre-contract in January and then sign him permanently on a free at the end of the season.

Football Insider report Rangers have been alerted to the fact that Edwards has entered the final year of his Peterborough deal and has made it clear he will not sign an extension.

Good move for Rangers?

Yes, definitely. Especially if they can snap him up on a Bosman freebie. Posh director of football Barry Fry has told Peterborough Today that there is “no way” Edwards will sign a new deal with his club but they will refuse to sell him this summer. Fry is a fan of the left winger, claiming he’d “rate him at £5million”. Edwards scored seven goals and registered five assists in 33 games in all competitions for Posh last season but any pursuit of him comes with a caveat. Injury has restricted him to 48 out of a possible 92 Peterborough starts in 2016-17 and 2017-18.

Likely to happen?

There is certainly a good chance, given Fry has admitted the player does not want to extend his Post contract and has set his sights on the exit door. Given that a highly rated wide man is potentially available for nothing, Rangers are well placed as they can take advantage of cross-border rules to get the deal done in January ahead of English club. Rangers have secured similar arrangements in the past, after snapping up Acrrington duo Josh Windass and Matt Crooks in January 2016 on pre-contracts.
