Steven Gerrard is refusing to give up on bringing Millwall centre-back Jake Cooper to Ibrox after having a second bid rejected, according to the Scottish Sun.

They claim that Rangers remain locked in talks with the London club and are going to table a third bid before the end of the week.

The second bid was reportedly for £3million which means the third bid will top the amount paid for Connor Goldson, Gerrard’s most expensive recruit so far.

Cooper would be Rangers’ tenth signing of the season after Umar Sadiq, Lassana Coulibaly, Goldson, Nikola Katic, Jamie Murphy, Allan McGregor, Jon Flanagan, Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria have all joined.

However, if Millwall refuse to do business Rangers already have a back-up in mind, Blackpool’s Curtis Tilt, who would cost £1million.

OPINION

Gerrard has already completely revamped the Rangers team and is now looking for his most expensive signing of the summer in Jake Cooper. With a £3million bid already rejected, Rangers are planning one last bid to bring the talented 23-year-old defender to Ibrox. Cooper would round off the new-look Rangers defence perfectly, and with him on board Gerrard would have true depth in the position that was so often the weakness for the Gers last season. If they can navigate through their Europa League qualifiers, this season is going to be gruelling and more quality recruits are needed. Rangers fans, and indeed Celtic fans, might be surprised at the size of the bid, with £3million already rejected, but the board are obviously willing to spend to enable Gerrard and Gary McAllister to have the best chance of success this season. Their buys so far have ben solid and now it’s a race against time to gel the new squad together before the imminent start of the new Premiership season.
