If Steven Gerrard is looking to strengthen his attacking options upfront alongside Alfredo Morelos, he could do with taking a look at a player who only left the team last season and perform a shock transfer u-turn.

Martyn Waghorn has been setting the Championship alight since his move down south from Ibrox last summer.

His 16 goals and 13 assists in 44 games in England’s second flight have reportedly captured the interest of a host of clubs in the division.

The Scottish Sun state that Middlesbrough and Birmingham City are in the midst of a transfer tug of war for the versatile striker, who can also play on either flank.

But if Gerrard could do what he’s been doing all summer by getting his hands on a player who will guarantee goals, as Waghorn has already shown he is capable of doing in the Scottish top flight, their options upfront would be greatly improved.

With Roma forward Umar Sadiq set to join the club on a season-long loan after STV reported an agreement had been reached, he is young and remains untested at the highest of levels having never featured for his parent club on a senior level.

With Wagorn in the ranks, he has the experience and the quality to lead the way in the Scottish Premiership and would be an intelligent capture by Gerrard to bring in a player who has already worn the shirt and has an affinity with supporters.

It might be a shock turnaround for the Gers, but their lack of proven talent hurt them last season, and Waghorn knows what it takes to be a success at Ibrox with his 44 goals in 78 appearances.
