Rangers have made an improved offer for towering 6ft 3in Millwall enforcer Jake Cooper, according to the Scottish Sun, but they will probably need to smash their summer spending record to land him.

Millwall manager Neil Harris has said that Cooper is not for sale, but Steven Gerrard isn’t taking no for an answer as he tries to land his 10th signing of the season after Mali midfielder Lassana Coulibaly and Nigeria striker Sadiq Umar joined on season-long loans.

Money is obviously an issue but Gerrard should go all-out to reach Millwall’s asking price as Cooper could be the final piece of the Ibrox jigsaw after a hugely impressive summer.

Reliable website Football Insider had claimed yesterday that Rangers had made a £3million offer for Cooper. Rangers blog Four Lads Had a Dream said that reports of the £3m were ‘accurate’ but that Rangers still had work to do.

Now Gerrard must go back in to test Millwall’s resolve with an even bigger bid, with the Scottish Sun say they are confident of landing their man.

How much will it take to land him? Millwall say he’s not for sale but every player has his price.

London journalist John Kelly said that he would be surprised if Millwall value him lower than £5million and says that he doubts Rangers could pay that.

However, we think an improved bid of £4million would see the player hook up with Gerrard for an assault on Celtic next season.

That would mean that Cooper would become Rangers most expensive player this summer, after spending £3million on Connor Goldson.

But he would be worth it. With Goldson, Cooper, Nikola Katic and Ross McCrorie at the heart of his defence, Gerrard will finally have a team that can haul their bitter rivals back in.
