Newcastle loan exit must see Rangers pounce on Armstrong

While new Rangers boss Steven Gerrard might have been busy strengthening his side with as many as six new arrivals, he is yet to bring in anyone to compete with Alfredo Morelos in the centre forward role.

With Kenny Milller leaving in acrimonious circumstances, it leaves just the Colombian and Eduardo Herrera, who has hardly hit the ground running since his move to Ibrox, battling it out up top for the new season.

Gerrard will know that he needs both more bodies and an improvement in quality if he is to help the Light Blues close the gap to fierce rivals Celtic at the top of the Premiership table, and he should be looking just south of the border at Premier League side Newcastle United.

Journalist Alan Nixon has suggested that the Magpies are willing to let young hitman Adam Armstrong leave on either a loan or a permanent deal this summer after failing to make the grade on Tyneside, and the Gers could do a lost worse than bringing the 21-year-old to Ibrox.

A proven poacher, the English under-21 international would bring pace and trickery to the Light Blues forward line, offering a different sort of option to Morelos and Herrera.

To avoid any worries and doubts over whether he has what it takes to cut it in Scotland, a loan-to-buy move would be perfect, giving Gerrard the chance to run the rule over Armstrong while having first choice on whether to snap him up permanently next summer.

The Gers need new strikers to catch Celtic, and the Newcastle man could be one of a number of new arrivals who can make the difference in Glasgow next season.
