Former Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson believes that a touted move for Hearts forward Kyle Lafferty is a “no-brainer” for manager Steven Gerrard.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the Light Blues are set to return with an improved bid for the 30-year-old striker after seeing an initial offer of £200,000 rejected.

Ferguson has now weighed in on the potential transfer, claiming that a move for his former teammate Lafferty makes perfect sense for the Gers this summer.

In a column for the Daily Record, he said: “When Kyle Lafferty first arrived at Ibrox 10 years ago it quickly became apparent that he was both Rangers-daft – and as daft as a brush. But on the park, while it was a bit of a mixed bag, I have to say that during my time with him I thought he was a real talent and crucially a player for the big occasion.

“That is why it’s a no-brainer for Rangers to get him back if they can get a deal agreed with Hearts after reports that an initial bid was rejected.

“Rangers would be crazy not to go for him and he’d be crazy not to go. But he’s under contract at Hearts and they hold all the aces.”

OPINION

A move for Lafferty would be a brilliant way for Rangers to round off their busy summer window, with the experienced striker a perfect addition to an attacking force that has been lacklustre so far in pre-season. His knack for the big occasion, as mentioned by Ferguson here, is just one of many qualities that Lafferty would bring to Ibrox. His presence up front and his accomplished finishing ability also come to mind, with current striker Alfredo Morelos not impressing in either department so far. As Ferguson says, it is a no-brainer for Rangers to look to sign Lafferty, who has just one year left on his current deal at Tynecastle. Hearts will surely want to get some return on their investment in Lafferty, and should Rangers return with that improved offer, then a deal is likely to be struck. To bring in someone of such experience and form would be a coup for the Gers, who need all the help they can get ahead of a crucial season.
