Fabio Cardoso has hinted at an exit from Rangers after posting a mysterious tweet on his official Twitter account.

The Scottish Sun claimed on their website that the Portuguese defender, who featured just 18 times for Rangers last season, is not to be a part of Steven Gerrard’s future plans at Ibrox.

Cardoso tweeted a single celebration emoji to his Twitter account on Friday night, prompting speculation that he is set to leave the Glasgow club.

Cardoso’s tweet prompted his team-mates, Josh Windass and Daniel Candeias, to react by sending the 24-year-old their best wishes via Twitter.

Windass said: “Go and prove people wrong mate. There’s nothing better”, while Candeias said: “You will play a lot. You’ll be happy.”

The stopper signed a three-year deal when he joined Ibrox from Vitoria Setubal last summer but has been frozen out of a chance in the first team.

OPINION

Many Rangers fans would be sad to see Rangers lose Cardoso, who has only managed one season with the club and is yet to make a memorable impact on the supporters. Since the sacking of Pedro Caixanha in October, Cardoso has fallen down the pecking order and remains in limbo over first-team selection.  The Portuguese deserves an opportunity to prove to Steven Gerrard that he is more than capable of being valuable to the squad. Gerrard has already splashed the cash on bringing in two new defenders in Conor Goldson and Nikola Katic, suggesting that the 38-year-old boss has no plans for Cardoso. The 24-year-old was not included in the squad which travelled out to Croatia for Rangers’ Europa League qualifying tie against NK Osijek. Gerrard has added ten new faces this summer and with a large amount entering through the doors at Ibrox, Cardoso looks likely to slipping quietly out.
