Rogic returns for Celtic as Dembele a major doubt

|

Brendan Rodgers is set to welcome back Tom Rogic for Celtic’s Champions League qualifier with Rosenborg on Wednesday night, but could be missing striker Moussa Dembele, according to the Scottish Sun.

The Australian midfielder missed the games against Alashkert after playing in the World Cup finals this summer, but Rodgers has included him in his squad as he looks to boost his attacking options.

Defender Dedryck Boyata, also at the World Cup this summer, will probably not feature, while the game will probably come too soon for Sweden’s Mikael Lustig.

Rogic’s inclusion is a major boost for Celtic as they’re sweating the fitness of Dembele, who limped off in the 66th minute of the game against Alashkert last Wednesday.

The Sun claim that he is not set for a long spell out but could miss the game tomorrow.

After the Alashkert games, things start to get a bit harder for Celtic in their quest to reach the Champions League group stage. Dembele will be a miss if he’s not fit but after struggling with injuries last season you’d expect that Rodgers would play things safe in the first leg. He has Odsonne Edouard to rely on for goals, with the new summer signing already having notched in the first leg against Alashkert. The return of Rogic will be a huge boost though. He’s been a key man for Celtic in some of their biggest games and should be able to help steer his side towards a win at home ahead of the second leg at Rosenborg next Wednesday. After Rosenborg? The pressure ramps up again with AEK Athens waiting in the third qualifying round. It’s a tough start to the season and Rodgers could have done with all his stars to call on, but fans will be hoping they have enough in hand even if Dembele is ruled out.
