Celtic are set to hold urgent contract talks with first team centre-back Dedryck Boyata, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claimed on their website that the Hoops want to persuade Boyata in securing a long-term contract at Parkhead with Fulham also expressing their interest in signing him after a solid World Cup with Belgium.

It is understood that manager Brendan Rodgers and chief executive Peter Lawwell want to hold discussions with the Belgium international after he returns from his extended summer leave.

OPINION

Boyata has been in great form for both club and country this season and securing his future at Parkhead would be a huge boost for Celtic in their bid to continuing their success in winning trophies. Boyata was at the heart of Celtic’s double-treble winning season with a string of top performances and is highly favoured as one of Celtic’s best defenders. The former Manchester City defender is highly rated by manager Brendan Rodgers and, despite looking uncomfortable in the Premiership, has looked solid in Glasgow. His pace, power and strength are traits that Celtic will need in their defence next season and Boyata has shown he is a valuable asset for the squad. After such a strong World Cup campaign, many fans would have worried that Boyata’s stint at Celtic was coming to an end. However, that does not seem to be the case and with Champions League qualifiers on the horizon, Rodgers will desperate to tie the 27-year-old to a long-term contract as soon as possible.
