Sampdoria have tabled a seven-figure bid worth £8million plus add-ons for West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang, according to Sky Sports Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Italian reporter has claimed on his personal website that the Serie A side are ready to hand Obiang, 26, a four-year deal for him to sign for them a second time, and the Hammers are now mulling over their bid.

Statistics website Spotrac reports that the former Spain Under-21 international earns £55,000-a-week on his deal at the London Stadium, where he spent a lot of last season injured.

Good move for West Ham?

Obiang is quite a popular player among the West Ham faithful and many will be disappointed to see that he could potentially be leaving the club this summer.

He was arguably Slaven Bilic’s best player in 2016/17, but injuries have really got the better of him in the last season and a half, so it would probably be wise to cash in on him now before his problems get worse.

The Hammers have had too many players injured recently and getting them off the wagebill is a good idea.

Obiang would probably be worth a lot more than £8million if he was able to stay fit, but in this case, it is perhaps the best that the club is going to get for him.

Likely to happen?

It does seem that there is a good chance that Obiang will be gone this summer.

Manuel Pellegrini could do with a more rigid defensive midfielder who is able to avoid as many injuries as the Spaniard has had at the London Stadium, and to get one, it’s likely that Obiang will have to make way.
