As Wolves reportedly close in on the signing of Joao Moutinho, is this the best promotion squad of all time?

As reported by BBC Sport, Wolves are close to signing the Monaco central midfielder for £5million on a two-year contract.

The question is this; if the Midlands club complete this signing, is this the best newly-promoted Premier League team that English football has ever seen?

So far this summer, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have signed players of the highest quality. The likes of Diogo Jota, Rui Patricio, Raul Jiminez, Willy Boly, Leo Bonatini and Ruben Vinagre have arrived at Molineux in this window so far, with Moutinho reportedly the next to arrive.

Starting in goal,  Patricio is one of the best keepers around and has played at the highest level for a number of years, playing regularly in the Champions League and is also a European Championship winner – he would get into almost any side in European football.

In defence, Conor Coady and Boly are a formidable pairing, who are flanked by impressive ultra-attacking wing-backs Matt Doherty and Barry Douglas.

In midfield, if Nuno manages to pair Ruben Neves with his Portuguese compatriot Moutinho, that would surely be one of the most technically gifted central midfield pairings in the Premier League. The 31-year-old is a Ligue 1 title winner, Primeira Liga winner, Europa League winner and of course, a European Championship winner.

When you add the impressive defensive midfielder Romain Saïss into the mix, with highly-rated English maestro Morgan Gibbs-White in reserve, that really is a strong midfield for a promoted side.

In attack, Jota and Ivan Cavaleiro flanking on-loan Benfica forward Jiminez in a genuinely exciting front-three, with the likes of Helder Costa, Bonatini and youngster Bright Enobakhare as the back-ups, that is enough to scare any top-tier defence.

Forget staying up or settling for mid-table mediocrity, this Wolves team are capable of, well, who knows? One thing is for sure though, it is going to be fun to watch, and that must be an exciting prospect for all Wolves fans.
