West Ham have joined the race to sign in-demand defender Diego Reyes with the likes of Real Betis and Sevilla, according to Estadio Deportivo.

The Spanish sports website reports that the Hammers have joined the chase to sign the 25-year-old centre-back, but are ‘getting in the way’ of La Liga clubs Real Betis and Sevilla from making a move for the Mexican international.

Newcastle have also expressed an interest in signing the 6″2 colossus, but Irons’ boss Manuel Pellegrini is keen to consolidate the centre-back position after the arrivals of Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena – and Reyes is available as a free agent after the expiry of his contract at Porto.

Good move for West Ham?

Yes, possibly. Even though Pellegrini is keen to ensure he has enough options in the centre-back role, it is safe to say that he already has an adequate amount of reinforcements in that area.

It is healthy to have competition for a role, but his potential arrival would overcrowd that position, and he would not be guaranteed regular first-team football.

He is a talented defender, but West Ham already have enough at their disposal.

Likely to happen?

No, not really. Spanish outfits Real Betis and Sevilla are in the race to sign Reyes, and with West Ham apparently ‘getting in the way’ of that, then a move is not likely to happen anytime soon.

The Hammers have not had any discussions or made any formal offers for the Mexican, so it is safe to say that we will not be seeing him playing at the London Stadium.

It is easy to conclude that West Ham are not going to be signing another defender this summer.
