West Ham duo Andy Carroll are set to be sidelined for three months after suffering setbacks with their respective injuries while Manuel Lanzini is set to return to London, as revealed in a detailed statement on the club’s official website.

The Hammers report that the striker and defender are set to be out for a minimum of three months each, with Carroll requiring minor surgery on his ankle after scans revealed he needs attention on the weak point to ensure injuries are not persistent.

Reid, the 6″3 (source: Transfermarkt) centre-back, is also in need of surgery after sustaining some swelling around the knee – an injury which he acquired last season in the Hammers’ match against Swansea – in order to regain full fitness once again.

However, Argentine winger Lanzini, who suffered a major blow while on international duty, is said to be progressing well in his recovery efforts, and will be heading back to the English capital to continue his recuperation.

OPINION

The news that two of West Ham’s most experienced players are set to be out for a minimum of three months is undoubtedly going to be a blow for boss Manuel Pellegrini and the fans. Being out for this amount of time indicates they will not return to full fitness until October at the earliest, which means they will miss the start of the season in August, where the team will want to hit the ground running. This news will also mean that Pellegrini will have to strengthen his squad beyond the five signings he has made so far, as the loss of Carroll and Reid means that two key areas of the team have be weakened. The Chilean will need to make these signings sooner rather than later, especially as the beginning of the new Premier League campaign is fast approaching – and he will need his team to be at full strength when it does.
