Defender Malachi Walcott has agreed the terms of a Tottenham contract, according to a picture on an insider’s Twitter account.

The Lilywhite Rose account, which provides well-sourced information about Spurs’ youth team and academy, released an image that showed the centre-back penning a Spurs scholarship deal that runs until June 2020.

The England Under-16 international is a member of the new intake of players at the Spurs academy who will play in the club’s Under-18s next season.

For any young player, a scholarship contract is the first major step on the road to the big time. To secure such a deal at a club like Tottenham is a huge honour, and also a stern examination of the young player’s credentials. Unlike his namesake Theo, Malachi is a defender who has earned his spurs through his performances at centre-back. His commanding presence and recovery pace have helped him deliver the performances to become an England youth cap, and also set him on the road to making it at one of England’s elite clubs. Walcott’s challenge is to make a big enough impact to earn a professional contract and then join those who have graduated from the club’s productive academy into the first team. The shining lights are the two Harrys, Kane and Winks, while the likes of Danny Rose, Tom Carroll, Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason and have also gone on to be regulars for the Spurs senior side in recent years.
