Tottenham midfielders Harry Winks and Joshua Onomah were surprise absentees from the club’s squad for their USA tour as a result of injury blows, according to the Evening Standard.

The newspaper report that Winks was hoping that he might be able to feature in a bid to be fit before the start of the new campaign, but is still suffering from an ankle issue, while Onomah has a knee problem, so neither have flown to the USA on the club’s pre-season tour.

The report claims that 22-year-old Winks is likely to miss the start of the season, despite having ankle surgery back in May.

The absence of 21-year-old Onomah, who spent last season on loan at Championship side Aston Villa, where he made 37 appearances, scoring 4 goals and providing three assists, is also a surprise, with the club giving no indication of any injury on their official channels.

This injury blow further emphasises Spurs’ need to start being more active in the transfer window. While nearly every other Premier League team are getting on with their transfer business and bringing in exciting players to give the fans some hope ahead of next season, Spurs have so far failed to give their fans anything to shout about in the upcoming campaign. Contract extensions of key players are all well and good but fans want to see the club show some ambition and push higher in the league table, and that means bringing in high-quality additions. The London club may have a few surprises up their sleeves over the next few weeks, at the moment though, it is hard to see how this club can challenge the likes of Manchester City or Liverpool in the upcoming season, considering how much their top flight rivals have improved their squad in the summer break.
