Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has praised the quality of his young players in a recent pre-season friendly and particularly Luke Amos.

The Argentinian has included Spurs youngsters Amos, Anthony Georgiou, George Marsh and Oliver Skipp on the club’s USA pre-season tour this summer, having all been on the fringes of the first team in north London.

The quartet were given a taste of first-team action when all four featured in a 4-1 International Champions Cup win against Italian side Roma on Wednesday.

Pochettino was particularly impressed with the dazzling performance of 21-year-old Amos, who started the game in holding midfield, but refused to compare him to former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason.

“Yes but I don’t want to say there is a similarity with the feeling I got with Ryan. But Luke played very well and he still needs to work hard,” Pochettino told Football London.

“I thought he and all our midfielders who came on the pitch showed an amazing energy.

“I am so happy we have these types of players who are always willing to work so hard and keep running.

“Luke has a lot of quality. He needs to work hard to find the opportunity to play. But I am so proud of his performance and that of all our midfielders.”

OPINION

With the lack of Tottenham arrivals in this summer window, some of these young talents could find themselves fast-tracked into the first-team if they Pochettino thinks they’re good enough. He’s already shown that he’s willing to put his faith in some of the younger players, including the likes of Harry Winks, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Kyle Walker-Peters and more. Luke Amos could be the next Spurs star to break through into the first-team squad, as he proved with his great performance against Roma in the International Champions Cup in the USA yesterday. Even against a top team, Amos looked composed on the ball and didn’t look out of place in Pochettino’s system, fans could be seeing a lot more of him over the next few years if he continues to develop at this pace. There is also a lot of talk about the talent of 17-year-old Oliver Skipp, who is showing unbelievable ability for someone so young.
