“The reality is the Premier League is difficult and every year the others spend money and bring new players. You don’t know because we finished tenth this year we can be in the middle next season because everyone is spending,” He told the news outlet.
“We have to fix a target to stay up – that is it. Concentrate on staying up, and after that see where. It will be more difficult than last year. Fulham, Wolves are spending. Huddersfield, Brighton everyone is spending making it more difficult.
“Next year the target will be to stay up.”
One Newcastle fan said that the managers comments weren’t wrong and that things will only get worse.

Absolutely ridiculous. Sometimes you try and you end up failing, but at least the trying part gets you excited that anything could happen. This lot kill the fun before it even begins. (Ashley etc.)

OPINION
The Newcastle fans have every right to react like this. Rafael Benitez was probably trying to get the attention of Mike Ashley with these comments, as well as trying to dampen the expectations around St. James Park for next season. The Spaniard is clearly protecting himself but these quotes have only made the fans more angry about the club’s current predicament. Ashley needs to stump up cash, or sell the club, because The Magpies are simply stagnating at the momet and they will be in massive trouble next season if new signings, of which they need high-quality, don’t come in very quickly.
