Newcastle United are set to confirm the signing of Mainz striker Yoshinori Muto, according to Chronicle Live.

The outlet reports that the Toon have completed Muto’s medical and agreed personal terms with the Japanese striker.

The report reveals that the only hold-up in the deal is the striker’s visa and paperwork, which should be resolved before their opening Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur on 11th August.

The 26-year-old scored 10 goals and provided five assists in 30 appearances for the Bundesliga side last season.

Good signing for Newcastle?

Not particularly.

This is just another example of Mike Ashley shopping for bargain signings when he should be going all out and showing some ambition.

His Bundesliga record last season was nothing special, and neither were his performances in the 2018 World Cup for his national team Japan.

He showed some decent touches and his movement was good, but is he a top striker? No.

He may prove people wrong but at the moment, it looks like a bit of a desperate signing.

Likely to happen?

It looks entirely likely to go through.

Everything that is important to the deal has been agreed. The fee, the personal terms and the medical went through without any hitches. It’s a good job too because there weren’t any big numbers reportedly involved in the deal.

Just the paperwork, including things like the visa, is stopping the deal going through at this point.

It should all be confirmed over the next few days.
