Newcastle United are in talks with both Chelsea and Crystal Palace over bringing both former fan favourites Kenedy and Andros Townsend back to St James’ Park this summer, according to the Northern Echo.

The newspaper state that the Magpies are keen on seeing both of their ex-wingers make the move back to Tyneside and that discussions with their clubs are ongoing.

It is reported that a deal for Kenedy seems a serious possibility, while negotiations with Palace are taking longer thanks to a difference in valuation.

The report claims that the Eagles have slapped a £30million asking price on Townsend, while Newcastle are seeking a fee more in the region of £18million, with the majority of his purchase to be funded by the sale of Matt Ritchie, and as such a potential £22million compromise is on the cards.

Good move for Newcastle?

A difficult one to judge, for as much as the Toon Army would love to see Kenedy and Townsend back in the black and white stripes, there will be much reluctance if it means losing Ritchie.

The former pair are both very much speed machines down the flanks, while the Scottish international offers a more industrious approach, with a work ethic second to none.

His deliveries from set plays have also been a key part of Newcastle’s game, and while Jonjo Shelvey might be able to cover that, his exit will still be a big loss.

Likely to happen?

One new arrival certainly seems on the cards, but both might be a stretch too far for the wallet of Mike Ashley.

If Kenedy signs on another loan though, then Newcastle might still have enough cash to bring in Townsend, regardless of whether Ritchie stays or not.

There are many possibilities with this one, and it will be fascinating to see how it pans out.
