Newcastle haven’t made a bid for Liverpool striker Danny Ings this summer, according to a reliable journalist.

Lee Ryder, from the Chronicle, made the claim from Portugal where the Newcastle side are currently on a pre-season training tour.

He also said that there had been no bid for captain Jamaal Lascelles from Leicester, and that Newcastle were adamant that he wouldn’t be sold this summer.

Ryder posted the tweet to his personal account on Saturday evening.

This comes after reports have consistently linked Newcastle with a move for Ings, with the Telegraph the latest.

OPINION

Newcastle have signed Yoshinori Muto from Mainz and the BBC reported the fee was around £9.5million. He will become Newcastle’s fifth summer signing if he gets a work permit, after passing his medical and agreeing personal terms. He might not be the striker that Newcastle fans were hoping for this summer, but it will be interesting to see how he adapts to Premier League life. Danny Ings was reported to be available this summer, but most Newcastle fans will be glad that there’s been no interest from Rafa Benitez. We still think that could be a mistake. Ings has suffered from injuries at Liverpool  but when fit he’s a beast and would be exactly the sort of striker that Newcastle could have done with. However, after the farcical loan deal for Islam Slimani last January, you can’t blame Benitez for not wanting to touch another potentially crocked striker. It looks like Muto will be the latest unproven talent to be handed the baton at St James’ Park and we just hope he does better than Joselu did last season. Otherwise there could be more questions asked of Benitez and his approach to signer strikings.
