A number of Newcastle United fans ahve been left raving on social media after it was reported that Swiss international defender Fabian Schar was on his way to the club to undergo a medical.

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downey, who is the north east reporter for the broadcaster, claims on his personal Twitter account that the Magpies have activated a £3million relegation clause for the 26-year-old following the relegation of current club Deportivo La Coruna.

It is stated that he will be jetting in to Tyneside today (Wednesday, 25 July) to undergo medical tests ahead of his proposed arrival, and it is a move which has the Newcastle faithful delighted on Twitter, in what will be the club’s fourth deal of the summer after Martin Dubravka, Ki Sung Yeung and Kenedy.

This is Futbol has rounded up a selection of the supporters’ tweets:

Opinion

The Toon Army are over the moon with the proposed arrival of Schar and so they should be. A Swiss international with plenty of experience for both club and country for a bargain price tag of £3million – it is a low risk capture with potentially massive rewards. With Chancel Mbemba out the door, Rafael Benitez knows he needs a new centre back, and it looks as though he could be making a very healthy profit from the sale of the former Newcastle man and the subsequent purchase of Schar. The Spanish boss might be working off a tight budget, but when deals like this are out there, there is no man a club would rather have leading the transfer hunt, for Benitez has a contacts list to rival anyone else in world football.
