Newcastle are set to go back in for Argentina and Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico, according to the Sun.

The report claims that Rafa Benitez wants a left-back before the window slams shut and that Tagliafico has caught the eye again after playing for Argentina in the World Cup.

Fulham are also interested in the 25-year-old who could be available for a cut-price £8million despite having four years left on his contract at Ajax.

The Sun claims Newcastle have been contacted over his availability.

This comes after it was reported last summer that Newcastle were negotiating over a £3.7million deal for Tagliafico, who joined Ajax for that amount in January.

Good move for Newcastle?

It would have been a much better move if it had happened last summer or in January when Tagliafico was available for £3.7million. The report claims that Ajax are ready to let him go for £8million but that still means they’ve more than doubled their money in six months. Newcastle can’t afford to throw away that sort of cash but, on the plus side, Tagliafico is a talented played and still represents a bargain at his current asking price. The inflation is down to the World Cup, where Tagliafico impressed despite his country flopping.

Likely to happen?

Newcastle have been linked with a lot of players this summer and hardly any of the prospective deals have come to anything. That’s partly down to money and partly down to spurious links to cut-price players. The Tagliafico interest from last season seems solid though so there could well be something in this. The player is said to want to test himself in one of the elite leagues and Newcastle could offer him a big stage to strut his stuff on.
