Newcastle United’s decision to sell Kevin Mbabu last summer might not have been criticised by too many when it happened – but it could well be a transfer blunder which comes back to haunt them next season.

The Swiss centre back, who could also play on the right side of defence, was sent back to his homeland to join BSC Young Boys 12 months ago, having spent the season on loan with the Super League side the season previous.

Having impressed in Switzerland’s top flight, helping his side to the league title, as well as featuring in the Europa League, it is now reported that the 23-year-old could be heading back to the Premier League, with a price tag that will make Newcastle owner Mike Ashley weep.

Sky Sports journalist Keith Downey claims on his personal Twitter account that top flight new boys Fulham are eyeing up a move for the £10million-rated powerhouse, and if that is the case, then Newcastle have not only missed out on a hefty chunk of money, but could see their former fringe figure come back to haunt them in the upcoming campaign.

There is absolutely no way Newcastle got anywhere near £10million for his sale a year ago, having made five appearances for the first team at St James’ Park, and the fans will be left thinking what could have been had the Magpies shown some faith in the youngster.

He had impressed in those small number of outings but seemed out of favour with Rafael Benitez – a decision which might return to bite the Spaniard sooner rather than later.
