Newcastle United have not made a bid to try and prise Aston Villa’s star attacker Albert Adomah away but have held talks over potential transfer targets today (Monday, 9 June), according to journalist Lee Ryder.

The Chronicle report claims on his personal Twitter account that the Magpies have been busy at the start of the week in their hunt for some new recruits, but after the Sunday Sun (print edition, 08/07, Pg.60) claimed that Rafael Benitez was eyeing up 30-year-old Adomah as a potential target, it was stated that there was no offer on the table.

The Aston Villa man, who netted 15 goals, would be Newcastle’s third arrival of the summer were Rafael Benitez’s side to sign him up, having turned Martin Dubravka’s loan permanent and securing the free transfer of Ki Sung Yeung.

Opinion

There will not be too many members of the Toon Army losing sleep over not making a move for Adomah, and there would likely be much disappointment if he was to be one of the club’s big signings this summer. Still, it is positive to hear that transfer talks for other targets are underway and there are big hopes that the Magpies can bring in the sort of talent that Rafa Benitez has been screaming out for over the past 12 months. The likes of Kenedy and Andros Townsend would likely both be welcomed back, while a new striker seems an absolute must – who that might be remains to be seen though. The Newcastle faithful should also brace themselves for a surprise signing or two, as was the case with Mikel Merino last summer and Ki’s signing on a free just last month. Benitez likes to keep things under wraps, and the first fans might hear about it is when they are wearing the black and white stripes.
