Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has launched a move to try and take Harry Wilson from Liverpool this summer but faces a battle from former boss Brendan Rodgers at Celtic, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper state that Gerrard made an attempt to make the young winger, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Hull City, one of his very first signings at Ibrox, but that the Reds are forcing their legend to wait.

Now it is reported that the Gers’ fierce rivals Celtic have joined the hunt, with both Gerrard’s and Wilson’s old manager Rodgers making contact with the Anfield outfit over a potential loan.

Opinion

For the last couple of years Rangers have been some way behind Celtic both on and off the football pitch, with the Bhoys able to bring in a calibre of player far beyond what the Light Blues could expect to sign. Does this mean that the two clubs are closer to level pegging than they have been since the Gers collapsed into financial ruin? Perhaps not, but it does show just how ambitious Rangers are being with their transfer business to know that the reigning champions, who have held total dominance over the rest of Scotland for the last two years, are also keen on the same players. This one comes down to a battle between the two former Liverpool figures, and it could all come down to who can offer him the playing time that the Reds want him to be handed. That could see Rangers, who are lacking in quality down the flanks, handed a boost, although Celtic are seeking a replacement for former mainstay Patrick Roberts.
