A section of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to express their excitement over Daniel Sturridge’s burgeoning link-up with new signing Naby Keita after the team’s 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers.

Sturridge was expected to quit Anfield this summer after being loaned to West Brom for the second half of last season but he has out-performed fellow strikers Divock Origi and Dominic Solanke in the early pre-season matches.

The England international was the main eye-catcher in Liverpool’s latest friendly win, a comfortable 2-0 dismissal of Blackburn, providing the assist for forgotten man Lazar Markovic to open the scoring in the 63rd minute before smoothly adding a goal of his own 10 minutes later when he seized on a Keita pass.

Many Liverpool supporters took to social media to delight in the combination of Sturridge and Keita.

COMMENTARY:

Sturridge has suffered the slings and arrows of injury and misfortune more than most, and he always appears to be only a sharp sprint or lung-busting run away from tweaking a hamstring or suffering a seemingly-innocuous blow that sidelines him for months. But pre-season is a time for optimism and enticing possibilities, and the fans are certainly excited by the striker’s contribution in the friendlies, which have been in marked contrast to the underwhelming ones of Origi and Solanke. Pertinently, Sturridge is establishing a relationship with Keita, who Jurgen Klopp has hailed as a brilliant capture by the Merseysiders in a year of A-list signings the like of which is unequalled in the club’s recent history. Supporters are now keen for ‘Studge’ to remain at the club, and for one of his rivals to offloaded instead.
