Chelsea have confirmed the signing of vastly experienced goalkeeper Rob Green, with the 38-year-old signing a one year deal.

The Blues announced the news on their official Twitter account, stating that Green will provide back-up to Thibaut Courtois and Willy Caballero.

The former England international spent last season on loan at Huddersfield Town, but didn’t make a senior appearance for the Terriers.

Chelsea represent Green’s fifth Premier League club, having previously played for Norwich City, West Ham United and Queens Park Rangers in the top flight, alongside Huddersfield.

The 38-year-old was thrilled to get the deal over the line, telling the club’s official website: “It has been a whirlwind 24 hours.

“You are thinking about your career and where you want to go and then you get a phone call like this and it is a short conversation.

“It has been a pretty dramatic time for me and I can’t wait to get started. I am absolutely delighted and it is a thrill and an honour to be here.”

OPINION

It’s hard to say whether this is a good move or not because it’s simply a marriage of convenience. Chelsea needed another goalkeeper in and have found one who helps with their homegrown quota, while Green gets to extend his career by another year, at a big club, and pick up another pay cheque. This is neither a good deal nor a bad one, it simply is a deal. Green will likely never represent the club in a competitive game, just like with Huddersfield last season. That’s no slight on him but merely representative of where he is in his career. He’s been a good pro for a long time now and he deserves this time with a big club. Chelsea may yet make more moves in the ‘keeper transfer market, with Courtois’s future massively uncertain at this time. The Belgian continues to be linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, with the player doing little to douse the fires of speculation. There may yet be changes to Green’s new goalkeeping colleagues.
