Newcastle United have told forward Ivan Toney to find a new club, despite an impressive season out on loan in 2017/18, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.

The newspaper claims on their website that Toney, 22, has been banished from training with the senior squad with his time at St James’ Park all but over.

Last season, Toney scored 14 goals in 46 appearances across all competitions in two loans spells at Wigan and play-off semi-finalists Scunthorpe.

Good move for Newcastle?

Toney showed a lot of promise when he was younger and many were tipping him to one day break into the senior squad.

However it now looks as though his spell at St James’ Park is coming to an end, having only ever made four first team appearances for the Tyneside club.

At 22-years-of-age, a player like Toney should be impressing much more at his parent club and not being sent out on loan to League One clubs.

He can still develop into a decent Championship player, so maybe cashing in on him now rather than losing him for free in a couple of years is the best option for the Magpies.

Likely to happen?

It will be a shock if Toney was short of suitors this summer, especially after the season he had with both Wigan and Scunthorpe last term.

He showed that he can perform consistently in League One with some of the league’s better clubs, and that should either see him seal a similar move to the third-tier, or maybe even snapped up by a lower-ranking Championship side.

As he has been told to find a new club, it’s very likely that he will be on his way out this summer.
