Heerenveen have wrapped up the signing of midfielder Rodney Kongolo from Manchester City.

The Dutch Eredivise club announced via their official Twitter account on Wednesday that Kongolo, 20, has returned to his home nation after four years on the books at Man City by agreeing a four-year deal with Heerenveen.

Kongolo failed to make a single senior appearance for City during his spell in England and spent last season on loan at Doncaster Rovers in League One.

OPINION

Kongolo was snapped up by Man City in 2014 after impressing in the youth ranks at Feyenoord, however his time in England has not gone entirely to plan and he is now back in the Netherlands. Big things were expected of Kongolo, whose brother Terence managed to break into the Feyenoord first team before playing for the likes of Monaco, Huddersfield and the Dutch national team. Rodney has never managed to follow in the footsteps of his brother and perhaps paid the price of moving to the Premier League too soon instead of plying his trade in his home nation. Hopefully he is able to kickstart his career at Heerenveen, who finished eighth last season and had a real shot of qualifying for the Europa League. Heerenveen has proved in the past that they are a great club for young players, having helped the development of Jon Dahl Tomasson, Hakim Ziyech, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Manchester United icon Ruud van Nistelrooy.
